About Gary Rosenthal

Gary Rosenthal is an internationally renowned Jewish artist from Kensington, MD, who has been sculpting welded metals and fused glass for over four decades. Using copper, brass, steel, gold, and fused glass, Rosenthal has developed an artistic style found in millions of Jewish homes and synagogues across the country. The Gary Rosenthal Judaica Collection covers almost every aspect of Jewish life. Rosenthal Judaica includes hand-made Dreidels, Menorahs, Mezuzahs, Shabbat Candlesticks, Kiddush Cups, Tzedakah Boxes, Sculptures, Bookends, and even Shofar Stands.

Gary Rosenthal was introduced to forging by his father, a stove repairman. Helping his father cast parts set him on a tinkering journey that led him to experiment with metal oxidation and mixed media techniques that continue today. A pioneer of modern Judaica, Gary Rosenthal helped reintroduce the art form to Americans post World War II. He was also one of the first Judaica artists to introduce Wedding Chuppah Breaking Glasses and Keepsakes. These mementos are fashioned from the shards of the glass brides and grooms smash under the wedding canopy.

What inspires Gary Rosenthal’s many innovations is a deep belief in the Jewish tradition that teaches that “it’s a blessing – a mitzvah – to make beautiful, functional, art.” As a social activist, Rosenthal has worked to combine not only materials but also art and causes. He is the creator of the Glass Ribbon collection, which uses fused pink glass to help raise awareness for breast cancer. Additionally, Gary Rosenthal is the CEO of Art as a Catalyst, an organization which provides art education and enrichment funding through a program that simultaneously trains and empowers special needs groups.

A testament to the universal appeal of his work, Rosenthal Judaica has been gifted to and sought after by some of the most famous names in the country and world. Presidents from Carter to Obama, and celebrities like Bette Midler and John Travolta, have all been recipients of his work. Gary Rosenthal Judaica has been featured in museums and art galleries worldwide as well, including the Smithsonian, American Craft Museum, and the Corning Museum of Glass.

Despite its popularity, the hand-made nature of his artwork ensures that it remains distinctive and unique, making the piece you buy all the more meaningful. What’s more, many come with personalized brass or glass plaque add-on options that make them perfect for gifts and awards.
