Blue Dawn Silver Ketubah

pThe Blue Dawn Silver Ketubah is inspired by the synagogue in Szeged, southern Hungary, which is one of the most beautiful in all of Europe. Built between 1900 and 1903 under the supervision of architect Leopold Baumhorn, the synagogue displays a fascinating blend of many styles: Moorish, Byzantine, Gothic, Roman, and Baroque. The chief Rabbi, Dr. Immanuel Lew, a botanist, is responsible for the many botanical design elements gracing the interior of the synagogue. The artist donates a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this ketubah to the Foundation for the Synagogue in Szeged, created in 1992 to provide funds toward reconstruction and preservation of the synagogue. Several of Rabbi Dr. Immanuel Lew's botanical design elements can be seen in this ketubah: blackberry briars, willows, and roses around the perimeter. The colors in the synagogue include ivory, silver, and a cobalt blue, which becomes rich and dark in the evening with candlelight; this is the palette chosen by the artist for this ketubah. The pair of trees at dawn in the upper portion are the kind one might happen upon strolling along the banks of the Tisza River outside Szeged.
