The Menorah is the central mitzvah of Hanukkah. The tradition dates back before the common era and the Jewish victory over their Greek oppressors. They lit the Menorah in the Temple in Jerusalem, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. Though the Jews had only enough oil for one day, their Menorah stayed lit for eight. Today, we light candles each of the eight nights of Hanukkah, commemorating that miraculous event.

There are many types of Menorahs, also called Hanukkiahs, used to observe the holiday. Candle and Oil Menorahs have been used for centuries, though there has been a recent explosion of modern, exciting Menorah designs. Electric Menorahs have especially gained popularity as a fire-safe alternative. Children’s Menorahs now also come in a fun array of shapes and colors, allowing young kids to celebrate with the whole family. For those who want to add a festive splash to their yard, synagogue or office, Display/Outdoor Menorahs add just the right touch of Hanukkah cheer.

How to Light the Hanukkah Candles:

Each night of Hanukkah, another candle is added to the Menorah, starting from right to left. Using the Shamash, or “helper” candle, light the current night’s candles from left to right, while reciting the appropriate blessings.

Our Favorite Menorahs

Our favorite Menorahs celebrate the holiday through innovative, contemporary designs. Michael Aram’s Palm Menorah and Olive Branch Gold Menorah both play with shape and texture to create a truly unique lighting experience.

Yair Emanuel Menorahs are similarly creative. The Israeli artist challenges the traditional Menorah architecture with the colorful Anodized Aluminum Cone Menorah and the equally novel Floating Cubes Menorah.

Rounding out our favorites are the sophisticated, hand-painted enamel Menorahs from Quest, which, like the Cool Breeze Art Deco Menorah and Butterfly Menorah, continue to delight young and old alike.
