Different Haggadah Styles

The Haggadah is the central book of the Passover Seder, and while the main content remains the same around the world, many have created unique versions that reflect their community’s customs, values, and contexts.

Judaica.com stocks an assortment of Haggadahs featuring diverse Jewish traditions, including Ashkenazi and Sephardic texts, as well as Chabad, Orthodox, Reform, Conservative and Egalitarian variations.

Additionally, the Haggadahs include a choice of abridged, full length and added commentary versions, allowing Seder participants to select the Haggadah that best fits their needs. Many first-time Seder-goers prefer condensed guides, like the straightforward, egalitarian 30 Minute Seder Haggadah, while others seek to enhance the experience with Haggadahs featuring stories such as those found in the Touched by the Seder Haggadah, or through interactive analysis of the different Seder components found in commentaries like the Ramban Haggadah. There are also shortened translations of the Hebrew and Aramaic Haggadah text available for a more modern flow.

No matter who shows up at the Seder, there is a Haggadah at Judaica.com for everyone! For the youngest in the family, there are fun illustrated Haggadahs, like the Animated Haggadah. Older children might enjoy a more interactive, but still simplified copy, like the Dayenu! Haggadah from early childhood educator and award-winning composer Carol Boyd Leon. Adults have many options as well, including the beautifully detailed Babylonian Haggadah, and larger print versions, such as the Enlarged Family Haggadah.

What is in the Haggadah that you say at Passover seder?

Most Haggadah books contain instructions for all of the traditional Seder’s fourteen components, starting with Kadesh, the blessing over the first of four cups of wine, and ending with Nirtzah, songs of hope.

However, Haggadah specifically translates to ‘telling,’ and refers to the portion of the Seder known as Maggid. This section details the history of the Jewish people, with emphasis on the Egyptian enslavement and Exodus. The Haggadah focuses on themes of redemption, connection to G-D, and the patterns of subjugation and salvation Jews have experienced throughout time. By recounting these events, those at the Seder are prompted to see themselves within the greater narrative of history, as a key bridge between the past and the future.

What is asked during the seder meal?

Much of the Passover Seder is geared toward children, as the occasion is seen as a way to transmit Jewish history and values to the next generation. To make it a more educational and interactive experience for kids, the Haggadah and Seder meal are set up in question-answer format. The famous four questions asked by children at the start of the Haggadah exemplify this unique give-and-take. These questions draw attention to the differences between the Seder and all other nights and act as a lead-in to the Exodus account.

Many families look for additional means of involving children in the Seder. Popular methods include allowing children to choose their own, age-appropriate Haggadah, and using puppets, like the 10 Plagues Finger Puppets, and Passover toys, like the Soft Seder Set, to bring the story of the Egyptian Exodus to life.
