According to Jewish custom, the yahrzeit candle is lit at sundown on the eve of the yahrzeit (anniversary of the death), and at sundown preceding the start of Yom Kippur. Many also have the custom to light a yahrzeit candle at sundown preceding the last days of Succot, Passover and Shavuot (holidays on which Yizkor is said). The larger 7 day Shiva candle is lit in the house of mourning during the week of Shiva.
