Uncovering the World of iKippah

iKippah

We met with Sarale and Dina, the founders of iKippahs.com, to discuss the inspiration behind their brand and what motivates them to design.

How did iKippah begin?

So we’re sisters-in-law, and we’ve always had fun dressing our kids in adorable matching outfits and sharing notes. We enjoy adorning our boys and girls with layers of color and texture. In 2014, we noticed that one mandatory accessory was sorely lacking in the fashion department: the basic kippah (yarmulke). We decided to create a line of kippahs ourselves, with the originality, spunk, and style that was missing on the market. It’s been busy every since, creating over 1,000 beautiful, affordable, and well-made designs. And men wear our kippahs too! They either love the vibrant patterns, want to match their son (for the perfect photo) or will choose one our more conservative, but equally popular, lines. Parents, kids, and Jewish celebrities around the world can now wear a different kippah to match every outfit, every season, and every mood!

Why are Jewish men and boys are obligated to wear a kippah on their heads?

They wear it to constantly remind themselves that God is above us all, and that His Torah and Mitzvos are above us. It’s a beautiful concept, once you think about it - it’s a reminder to stay humble and not get caught up into all the trappings of today’s world. And in Judaism, we don’t just believe in doing a Mitzvah, but in beautifying that Mitzvah and make it special. That’s why we love and are so passionate about what we’re doing here. We’re not just creating fashion pieces, we’re helping men and boys keep this mitzvah and feel good while doing so. We’re helping mothers who love dressing and matching their little boys. We love taking this traditional mitzvah that’s been around for millenia and creating even more beauty and joy around it.

What makes an iKippah special?

Our kippahs are super popular right now on the market. While we talk about the designs a lot, that’s not the only thing unique to an iKippah. The fit, shape and quality are incomparable to other brands. Each one also sports a slot underneath where you can put your own clip in. But most of our customers tell us this isn’t needed, that the shape of the kippah fits perfectly on their heads.

How do you select the new designs and fabrics that you come out with every season?

Before designing, we first look at the general market for new colors, styles, and fashions of the upcoming season. We even ask some local New York clothing stores for their unreleased pieces to create perfectly complementary designs. We want to make kippah-wearing fun and exciting for everyone, with many options to choose from. While the more vibrant designs come and go, we keep the solid color lines year round, to match school uniforms and dress codes.

What are some of your all-time favorite designs?

There’s so many! We love the textured kippahs. The Dr. Suess - Red Fish Blue Fish is super popular, as well as the caterpillar one.

You’re well-known for your Allergy iKippah and other specialty Kippahs. Can you explain how you came up with these?

A couple years ago, we were contacted by a concerned Mom whose son suffered from severe allergies. She wanted a way to have others in school or camp be careful when they brought food around her son. So she came up with an idea to put an alert on a Kippah and reached out to us. We designed an Allergy Alert design that’s both stylish and eye-catching, and the Allergy Kippah was born! The kippah comes in denim and blue, so it matches everything, and the logo stands out in red - you can’t miss it. Best of all, there are so many different allergies that a child can have; this kippahs works for them all because it doesn’t specify any in specific. The symbol says “flip for info” and on the back you write the child’s name, DOB, and treatment criteria. This is perfect for younger boys who can’t supply all that information on their own, and cautions those around to be careful.

We also have some designs with hidden messages, such as the Connect Us Kippah, which has puzzle pieces, the universal sign for Autism. And the Color Me Mine is a favorite as well; it’s a coloring sheet on a kippah, and comes complete with fabric markers for a fun activity.

How has your experience been working together as sisters-in-law?

We’ve both always had different business ideas before iKippah. When this idea came up, we were super excited to finally begin working on something together. We each have different strengths and weaknesses that complement each other very well. Thanks G-d, we’ve always gotten along very well, it’s always been a blessing, not a challenge, to work together.
