Three Seder Plate Styles for Your Passover Feast

What is a Seder Plate?

A seder plate, called a ka’arah, is one of the main features of a Passover seder. It holds six of the featured foods that you’ll eat during the seder.

Picking the right seder plate is a key step in preparing for Passover, in addition to a thorough house cleaning, prepping for the seder, eating matzah, and avoiding bread and other grain based products, called chametz.

Too Much On The Plate? Break it Down.

These are the traditional foods that go on the seder plate:

1. There are two kinds of bitter herbs, or maror: spicy horseradish and a type of lettuce, usually Romaine. These remind us of the harshness of the Egyptian exile.

2. Charoset is a paste-like substance designed to look like the mortar used to keep the bricks together in building the pyramids. It is made of apples, nuts, and wine.

3. Karpas, a vegetable, is dipped in salt water and mimics the tears shed by the Jewish slaves. Traditionally, people use parsley, potato, onion, celery, or other green vegetables to symbolize the springtime.

4. The egg, beitzah, and roasted shank bone, zero’ah, are symbols of two sacrifices in the Holy Temple (Beit Hamikdash): the holiday offering, korban chagigah, and the Passover offering, korban Pesach.

Artsy/Floral

Celebrate springtime this Passover with a botanically-themed seder plate. The delicate lacy floral design is instantly recognizable as that of artist Orit Grader, and with its rectangular shape, it looks more like an elegant table tray than a traditional seder plate. Grader’s signature patina colors blend perfectly with jewel tone leaves swirling throughout the plate. A gift that mothers, grandmothers, sisters, and friends will enjoy for years to come.

Industrial/Rustic

This seder plate, crafted from forged iron and copper is cleverly designed in a way that makes each of the six sections removable. You can arrange the seder plate items however you prefer -- in a circle (as pictured), in a line, a zig-zag, or any formation really. A charming gift that will suit dads, husbands, and brothers and will add something special to their seder experience.
