About Rosetree Glass Studio

Rosetree Glass Studio is the dynamic conception of artist Mark Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum’s classically blown glass pieces are alive with iridescent colors and energetic curves. Although the methods he uses are traditional, the forms that Rosenbaum uses draw from his eclectic background in glass blowing, glass casting, ceramics, and jewelry. Rosenbaum is particularly renowned for his Wedding Glass Keepsakes, in which he fuses the shards of glass from under the chuppah into a work of art.

Mark Rosenbaum is a visionary in his field. Rosenbaum was the first recipient of a Master of Fine Arts in glassblowing from Tulane University, and in 1993 used a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts to found the first privately owned glassblowing studio in the state. Rosetree Glass Studio is housed in a rose-colored former Art Deco Theater. There, Rosenbaum and his apprentices make magic, much to the delight of visitors who can watch the process in-house.

What makes a Rosetree piece special is the connection between the artist and the art. Rosenbaum feels an affinity for glass and the process that he employs to convert its form. “Glassblowing is much akin to a dance;” Rosenbaum says. “The artist moves with respect to and knowledge of the partner. Each has an important contribution to the final piece, but only one will lead – the artist. The dance, when completed, yields an object that was only conceived in one’s imagination or on paper, a tangible work as a result of collaboration between artist and material.”

For forty years, this collaboration has brought into being remarkable works of art, each one unique. The glass this is used is created on-site from raw materials, which is blended with a comprehensive color palette and treated with a solution of precious metals. Everything from design to shipping is run in-house.

Among Rosenbaum’s most popular works are his Wedding Breaking Glass Keepsakes, made by fusing the shards of the glass broken under the chuppah to create a truly unique memento of a couple’s special day. For these compositions, Rosetree sells a collection of specially hand-blown, multi-colored Wedding Breaking Glasses. The sides of the brightly hued glasses are thinned and the tops scored to make them easy to crush under the Chuppah. The inside of the custom glasses are white and they come with a bag to hold the pieces.

After the wedding, the fragments are sent to the Rosetree Glass Studio where they are fused with clear glass and reconstructed into Judaica and household items. Due to the handcrafted nature of each piece, it can take up to five weeks to complete. Finished products include an assortment of personalized Kiddush Cups, Candlesticks, Bowls, Sculptures, Paperweights, and Bud Vases. The shards of glass swirl and dance inside them; joyful reminders of a special moment. As every piece is hand blown, no two are alike, making each creation all the more personal.

For those wishing to order a Rosetree Wedding Breaking Glass Keepsakes, it’s important to note that their keepsake items can only be made using the studio’s Breaking Glasses. If you would like to give this as a gift to friends or family, a certificate can be sent to the recipients. A pre-paid mailing label is also available for sending the broken shards to Rosetree, although you may choose to send them on your own.
