About Artist Michael Aram
Michael Aram is a Rhode Island native of Armenian descent with over thirty years of experience in art and metalcraft. Aram creates distinctive designs using silver, bronze, stainless steel, and other ores, transforming them into treasured family heirlooms. Michael is also known for his signature collections, the most popular ones being the Tree of Life, Botanical Leaf, Palm, Black Orchid, Olive Branch, Wisteria, and Golden Pomegranate collections.
Michael Aram sees overlaps in Jewish and Armenian experiences and deeply respects the traditions of the Jewish faith. This has led him to create various Judaica items, including menorahs, shabbat candle holders, challah boards and knives, Kiddush cups, mezuzah cases, seder plates, tabletop and serveware. In creating Judaica, Michael Aram’s goal is to craft modern and contemporary metal pieces that will be loved for generations as they forge special moments.
At 25, Michael Aram took a transformative trip to India that inspired him to explore the technical and refined art of metalwork. Aram studied the traditional artisanal techniques of native metal workers who made ordinary things in extraordinary ways. Using the skills of sand casting and metal forging learned from those gifted craftsmen, Aram opened his studio in New Dehli where three decades later he continues to create handmade works of art.
Even before that pivotal trip, Michael Aram was drawn to form and shape. After high school, he studied Art History at Bates College, then fine art at the University of Florence, Italy, and later worked at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Today, he continues to hone his craft, looking to nature, symbolism, and tradition to inform his designs. His handcrafting style seeks to mirror the natural world’s perfect imperfections and in this way reflect humanity itself. Each work he creates is therefore unique. Whether as gifts for cherished milestones, features of holidays or weekly use, Michael Aram art is both functional and decorative and is certain to earn a central place within your home and life.
