The Advantage of Oil Menorahs

When the Jews celebrated the first Hanukkah in the Temple, they did so by lighting an Oil Menorah. For generations, oil was the only way to light, and today many consider it the best, most beautiful way to fulfill the mitzvah.

How to light an oil menorah:

In order to light with oil, you’ll need to have supplies a Menorah that holds oil cups, glass cups/bulbs, wicks, and, of course, oil. All of these are available for purchase at Judaica.com, including prepared oil cups, like the Ohr Pre-Filled Menorah Bulbs. These will be placed from right to left in your menorah, with a new cup added each night of Hanukkah. The more oil you put in each cup, the longer the flame should last. Light the wicks from left to right while reciting the customary blessings.

Oil Menorahs are relatively easy to care for in comparison to Candle Menorahs, as there are no wax drippings to worry about. However, if oil does get on your Menorah, gently clean it off with a little bit of dish soap and a wet cloth.
