The Mitzvah of Mishloach Manot

Mishloach Manot, also called Shalach Manot, is one of four mitzvot we do to celebrate Purim. The basic fulfillment of the mitzvah is to give two kinds of food (two blessings) to one person. Many people decide to give shalach manot to more than one person - to their friends, co-workers, children’s teachers, to customers or clients, and in some cases, the entire community. You really don’t have to go all out, but of course you can give to as many people as you like.

Why send baskets of food on Purim?

To prove that Haman was wrong. Haman claimed that the Jews were a scattered, divided nation. We give shalach manot to show a sense of unity and friendship, bringing peace to ourselves and to each other, our community.

Purim brings with it the opportunity to give to those who may really appreciate it. Think about whether you know someone is homebound from a recent surgery or illness, seniors who might be lonely on Purim, special needs children and adults, soldiers, incarcerated individuals, or someone you know who could use a pick-me-up. We all know someone. They will appreciate the simple gesture. So start thinking and planning -- show that you care.

Shalach Manot is also a great opportunity to explore your creative side, the perfect way to get into the spirit of Purim and to bring some of the excitement to your kids. You can find bags and boxes for your Purim treats here.

Even the best intentions and most careful planning aren’t always enough. If you find Purim approaching faster than you expected, you can always order gorgeous baskets for the people who matter most in your life. And it’s okay, really, because if they know you care they won’t judge you for your lack of time and planning skills. Chances are they’re struggling with the same problem!

On behalf of everyone here at Judaica.com, we wish you a very Happy Purim. We hope you enjoy hunting for the Shalach Manot that fits your needs!
