Everything You Need to Know About Sukkot

What is Sukkot?

Sukkot, also called the Feast of Tabernacles, dates back to the Jews traveling in sukkahs, or booths, in the Sinai Desert after the Exodus from Egypt. To commemorate God’s protection, every fall Jews erect huts and spend a week within them. Sukkot 2019 is celebrated from October 13 to October 20. The holiday is immediately followed by two additional festive days, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.

Sukkot (alternatively spelled Sukkos or Sucot) is full of rich customs. In addition to universal rituals like shaking the Lulav and Etrog, families often create their own meaningful traditions. Judaica.com has everything you need to start creating lasting Sukkot memories, including Sukkah Decorations, DIY Sukkah Kits, Lulav and Etrog Sets, Lulav and Etrog Holders, Sukkot Machzorim and more!

Sukkah Decorations

For the seven days of Sukkot, families leave their houses to spend time in makeshift huts outdoors. Decorating the Sukkah has become a beloved tradition and fun bonding activity for many families. Decorations can be hung from the Sukkah’s roof or affixed to the walls, and many emphasize the harvest season and the holiday’s themes, like Lulav and Etrog.

Lulav and Etrog Sets

On the holiday of Sukkot it is customary to make a blessing on and shake the “four species.” The yellow Etrog (citron) and tall Lulav (palm branch) are the most prominent of these species, but bound to the Lulav are also Hadasim (myrtle branches) and Aravot (willow branches). These are sold in pre-matched sets, making the mitzvah easy to perform.

Lulav Holders & Etrog Boxes

The Lulav and Etrog are central to celebrating the holiday of Sukkot. Given their fragile nature, many choose to buy Lulav Holders and Etrog Boxes to keep them safe and intact over the full week of Sukkot. Many Lulav Holders and Etrog Boxes are beautifully decorated to add a festive touch to the utilitarian design.

Sukkot Books & Machzorim

Over the holiday of Sukkot, many special prayers are recited in Synagogue. Special Sukkot Machzorim help you keep your place with the congregation as you celebrate together. For those looking to further explore the practices, Halachot, and deeper themes of the holiday, there are many books and guides available.

DIY Sukkah Kits

A Sukkah is a temporary dwelling made up of at least three walls and a canopy roof. If you find the prospect of building a Sukkah simultaneously exciting and terrifying, have no fear. There are special DIY Sukkah Kits that make the process simple, so you can focus on the joy of Sukkot without worrying about how to connect 4X4s.

Sukkot is a joyous time of celebration for people around the world. In keeping with the festive mood, look for ways to layer in customs that foster fun and connection for the whole family, from decorations to Lulav and Etrog sets to new books and more. Most of all have a Chag Sukkot Sameach! Happy Sukkot!
